General codes of ethics

General codes seek to provide an overall set of standards, covering a whole range of issues such as:

information privacy
conflicts of interest
acting for third parties
impaired decision making capacity.

For example the Australian Psychological Society (the APS) Code of Ethics is a general code and contains parts on:

psychological assessment procedures
relationships with clients
teaching of psychology
supervision and training
research
reporting and publication of research results
public statements and advertising
membersí relationships with professionals

The Australian Association of Social Workers Code of Ethics is a general code that is broken into three key areas:

values and principles
ethical practice (a general code)
guidelines for ethical decision-making (specific issues)
